Description
Our founders Helen and Christopher Neave planted their first woodland of 20,000 trees in 2011. They were worried about what was happening to nature, and decided to do what they could to help. They were so delighted by the impact on biodiversity, of that first woodland, now Sylvan Nature Reserve, that they set up Make it Wild, to keep supporting nature and biodiversity.
Since then Make it Wild has planted another 60,000 trees, across ten sites in North Yorkshire, and a growing network across the UK.
As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It has been calculated that one tree can typically sequester 3.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide during the first 40 years of its life.
Our trees are planted with biodiversity in mind – native trees, planted naturalistically, in the right place, to encourage wildlife.
So planting trees with us will offset your carbon footprint … and so much more!
Carbon Offsetting for Individuals
Perhaps you are conscious of the impact of flights you’ve taken. Maybe you drive long distances, or heat your home with fossil fuels.
It can be very difficult to reduce our use of fossil fuels, and sometimes beyond our control. If you would like to counteract the impact of your lifestyle on the planet, a good way to do this is through planting trees.
If you want to take responsibility for your personal carbon footprint, we can help!

It has been calculated that one tree can trap 3.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide during its predicted lifetime of 40 years. We will protect and look after our trees, and many will live considerably longer than 40 years.
There may also be some natural losses. To ensure that enough trees reach maturity, at Make it Wild, we plant more trees than might seem necessary.
What to do next
If you want to estimate your carbon footprint:
Here some approximate figures in tonnes of carbon dioxide emitted by the following activities:
- a typical long-haul flight per person: 3 tonnes
- ten thousand miles driving in a typical family petrol car: 5 tonnes
- recreation, leisure, entertainment per person per year: 2 tonnes
- heating a typical UK home for a year: 2.5 tonnes
- lighting, household appliances in a typical house per year: 1.5 tonnes
- eating beef once per day for a year: 2.5 tonnes
If you want to calculate your carbon footprint:

Businesses wishing to offset their carbon footprint please see this product, tailored to your needs.
How does it work?
Simply decide how many tonnes of carbon dioxide you would like to offset. We offer carbon offsetting in multiples of 5 tonnes.
You can now choose which of our locations you would like your trees to be in. Perhaps you would like them to be near to your home? Simply choose from North Yorkshire, Norfolk or The Peak District, or we can choose for you if you have no preference.
Once you purchase your carbon offsetting trees, we will:
- plant new trees on your behalf, or assign recently planted trees to you – this depends mainly on the time of year
- send you a certificate which will confirm how many tonnes of carbon dioxide you have offset, and include a map and an aerial photograph showing the trees we have planted for you
- send you a digital ‘badge’ that you can use anywhere you wish to show everyone what you’re doing to help the planet
- protect and look after your trees for the foreseeable future, to ensure they reach maturity, and after approximately 40 years the trees will have offset all your carbon.
