Why choose Make it Wild?

Make it Wild are experienced in successful woodland creation. We have planted 80,000 trees to date, and created many acres of healthy woodland. Our first woodland, planted in 2011, is now Sylvan Nature Reserve, near Kirk Hammerton. For more details, click here. It was the impact of that woodland on the biodiversity of the area that inspired us to set up Make it Wild.

We believe there is no better way to address the dual challenges of the climate and ecological crisis, than through tree planting. We plant our woodlands of mixed native species, which has been shown to result in the sequestration of more carbon, mainly into the woodland soil, than single species plantations.

It is important for everyone to try to reduce their carbon footprint as much as possible, but in modern society it is difficult to reduce it to zero. To compensate for the carbon footprint that remains, Make it Wild can plant trees for you.

What’s the problem with carbon?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a major contributor to climate change. When fossil fuels are burned, by manufacturing, heating, and transport etc, carbon that has been locked away for millions of years is released back into the atmosphere. There, it traps the heat of the sun, causing Earth’s temperature to rise. Since the Industrial Revolution, the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere has risen by 40%.

What can we do about it?

Your first step, as a business, is to make a Carbon Reduction Plan. This will help you to understand the main ways you are emitting carbon dioxide (and other green house gasses). You can then design a strategy to reduce these.

In our current society, with our current infrastructure, it can be very difficult to reduce your carbon footprint to zero, or to reduce it as quickly as you might wish. You can address your remaining carbon footprint, or speed up your path to ‘net zero’ by carbon offsetting.

What are science-based targets?

‘Science-based Targets’ (SBTi) is an initiative providing standards, tools and guidance for companies, to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement goals. This will enable you to set your strategy to be net-zero by 2050.

What does being sustainable mean?

Looking more widely than ‘just’ carbon … being ‘sustainable’ refers to taking great care to avoid the depletion of natural resources, or causing damage to our planet. This might mean reducing avoidable water consumption, phasing out fossil fuel and plastic usage, and incorporating strategies to protect against damage to the environment. Sustainable businesses consider the three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social, and governance, enabling them to ensure that their long term environmental and social impacts are positive.

Carbon Offsetting

Carbon offsetting is a method used to compensate for carbon emissions that an individual or business makes, by investing in projects that sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Trees play a crucial role, as they absorb atmospheric CO2 through the process of photosynthesis, and then lock the carbon into their timber and into the woodland soil. This means that planting trees with Make it Wild is the perfect way to offset your carbon footprint, and will work alongside your Carbon Reduction Plan.

It is generally accepted that 1 tree will sequester 1 Tonne of carbon in its lifetime of 40 years. This is equivalent to 3.7 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide (CO2, usually referred to CO2e). Note that many trees live much longer than 40 years, and we intend our trees to live for many decades beyond this!

What are the benefits for me?

We believe that one of the best possible ways to compensate for your unavoidable carbon footprint, is through planting trees. We are absolutely transparent in the way we designate trees – From the aerial photograph we will send you, you will know exactly where your trees are. The trees sequestering your carbon will be in one of our protected nature reserves, in North Yorkshire, or at one of our growing network of sites across the UK.

What are the benefits for my business?

Carbon offsetting through tree planting can help your business in a number of ways:

  • it’s a fantastic contribution towards your ESG and CSR initiatives
  • brand positioning to attract the growing number of eco-conscious consumers
  • an attractive certificate to share, showing the location of your trees
  • a digital ‘badge’ anywhere you wish, to show everyone what you’re doing to help the planet
  • your customers, employees and business partners will be pleased to know that you are taking responsibility for your environmental impact
  • through calculating your carbon footprint, you may identify areas where you could use less energy, and thus save money
  • you can be proud that your business is helping nature – not only now but for decades to come

What are the Benefits for Nature?

Our number one aim at Make it Wild is to create a space for wildlife, and to support biodiversity. Planting trees is an essential part of this, and it also helps to address the climate crisis. Planting trees has so many benefits:

  • trees sequester CO2, removing it from the atmosphere which helps to address climate change
  • they clean the air of pollutants
  • trees attract insects, birds and small mammals, thus increasing biodiversity
  • they reduce flooding by absorbing water
  • trees stabilise soils and prevent soil erosion
  • they provide shade and shelter
  • trees are beautiful!
  • Woodlands are wonderful places that are important for our well-being
