We are delighted to partner with Fraser Farms, a regenerative farming project nestling in the countryside between Holmfirth and Barnsley. The Fraser family manage 450 acres of farmland, having taken over the management of the farm in 2018.

Hannah and Alex, two young first-generation farmers, were conscious of the environmental crisis we face. They set out to regenerate the farm’s ecosystem and embrace the ecological benefits that land can provide, whilst growing nutritious food for local people. They converted the land to organic production and now produce organic milling cereals, which go to a local mill and then to local bakers.

They are constantly experimenting, finding ways to farm that will boost soil life, encourage biodiversity, whilst still growing food for people. They have introduced agroforestry, planting more than 3000 trees and wildflowers in strips among the arable crops. Whilst the trees are still only young, they have already seen a bloom of wildlife inhabiting the wild flower under-storey, with mice, field voles and barn owls a regular sighting.

They grow species-rich herbal leys which provide the nutrients, such as nitrogen, needed for the subsequent cereal crops, avoiding the use of synthetic chemicals. The leys also provide a rich pollen source for insects and shelter for other wildlife. They are working to restore natural habitats such as the hedgerows and woodland and they hope to introduce new habitats such as ponds and wetland areas.

Hannah and Alex are also medical doctors, and they are passionate about the human health benefits that farming can bring. Hannah recently undertook a Nuffield Farming Scholarship, researching how farming practices can impact the nutritional density of food. There are also wider health implications of farming, including how we care for and preserve soil health, water quality and carbon sequestration.

This gorgeous and diverse site has many interesting features which will enhance biodiversity:

  • several large ponds, some in need of restoration
  • many gorgeous veteran trees
  • innovative agro-forestry strips

They will soon be offering a range of products for dedication or sponsorship, including Veteran Trees, Habitat Boxes of various kinds and ponds, as well as corporate visits and walk and talk events.
