Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a new important element in the development of sites for housing or commercial purposes. It ensures that habitats for wildlife are demonstrably improved as a result of the development.
Our Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Units offer developers like you an unparalleled opportunity to not only meet your regulatory requirements but also elevate your project in terms of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
BNG Units represent a measure of the net increase in biodiversity resulting from a development project. For the purposes of BNG, biodiversity value is measured in Standardised Biodiversity Units.
Any habitat will contain a number of units, depending on its size, quality, location etc. Standardised Biodiversity Units enable the ecological value added through conservation efforts to be quantified.
In England, BNG became mandatory in February 2024. When a development impacts natural habitats, developers must compensate for this loss by enhancing biodiversity on the development site or elsewhere. A gain of 10% must be delivered.
If developers cannot achieve BNG on their own sites, they must make off-site gains by using off-site biodiversity units.
BNG contributes to the long-term sustainability of development projects. It fosters resilient ecosystems, and mitigates the ecological risks associated with habitat loss. Moreover, it mitigates the risks to society associated with habitat destruction and ecological degradation.
High quality BNG will enhance the overall value proposition of development projects, attracting environmentally conscious investors and buyers.
Our BNG Units provide a straightforward pathway to regulatory compliance, helping you navigate complex environmental requirements with ease and confidence.
Our track record of biodiversity enhancement speaks for itself. Our first wonderful woodland, now “Sylvan Nature Reserve” was planted in 2011, with many ponds dug and habitats created. It was a rough grazing field, and is now a vibrant haven for wildlife. You can read about it here.
We have an experienced land management team who are responsible for all habitat creation, enhancement, and capital works, under the guidance of ecologists.
Make it Wild have long term ambitions for all of our land. We will carefully manage the site for the full 30 year term to ensure it generates the required biodiversity gains.
With our units, you can trust that your investment is making a tangible difference in preserving biodiversity.
Your specific needs and project requirements, whether large or small, can be easily met by our flexible and customizable solutions.
Biodiversity Units are available now at our Skipbridge site, which is being restored as wetland, scrubland and species rich grassland. Discover more here. Other locations may be available in due course. Speak to us if you have a particular location in mind.
Our founders, Helen and Christopher Neave, started enhancing habitat and supporting biodiversity in 2010, when they bought their first piece of land, to ‘give back to nature’.
They founded Make it Wild in 2017, and since then, the company has grown its current landholding to 500 acres over 10 sites. We own the freehold to all of our land.
