The winter season is famously a time of celebration. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, the Winter Solstice, or just the arrival of snow, there’s certainly something in the air in these colder months. The past couple of years have been marred by the pandemic and its notorious restrictions, so now more than ever these times of togetherness and festivity are incredibly important to the morale of the UK – and the world!
But one thing to consider along with the joyous occasions we’re all looking forward to is the environmental impact of the winter holidays. Christmas has been referred to as the world’s greatest annual environmental disaster. Estimates in 2019 suggested that 365,000 kilometres of unrecyclable wrapping paper would be discarded after Christmas – that’s enough to wrap around the moon 100 times over!
And the food waste? Biffa states that two million turkeys and 74 million mince pies would be wasted over the festive season. That’s a horrendous thought.
The issue at the heart of the holiday season’s impact on the environment is, unsurprisingly, human consumption. So, if you’re looking for a way to be a little more sustainable and environmentally-minded this winter, Make It Wild is here to help! All proceeds from our sales go towards looking after our nature reserves.
