Nature Dedications
Trees
It is our intention to maintain all the woodlands we create, in perpetuity. Our trees will never be cut down for timber or development. Thinning of areas deep in the wood may be carried out to enhance biodiversity, but dedicated trees will not be impacted by this.
Our Veteran and Century Old Trees, are, by definition, in the latter stages of their lives. They may lose limbs or even be blown over by strong winds. This is unfortunately to be expected for trees of this age. If this happens, any parts of the tree which fall to the ground will be left there (unless they are dangerous) to enter the next stage of their life – providing food and habitat for many invertebrates, and eventually future generations of trees.
Ponds
Our ponds are ‘natural’ – we do not add plants or wildlife. We have learnt that these will just arrive! We usually leave our ponds to see if they will hold water without being lined – and one or two of them do. However, we often resort to lining them. Although this is ‘unnatural’, we feel that it is a ‘necessary evil’ and as many thousands of ponds have been lost, we do everything we can to bring back this valuable habitat. Your dedication supports the cost of creation, lining, maintaining and monitoring the pond.
Bluebells, Snowdrops and Wildflowers
Our ancient woodlands at Bank Woods are carpeted with native English Bluebells and the grasslands at Covenhope are carpeted with snowdrops; your dedication supports us in protecting them.
We have a restored a wildflower hay-meadow at Bank Woods and sown wildflower meadows at Sylvan Nature Reserve and Dacre Woodlands. Your dedication helps us to maintain these as important habitats for insects, birds and small mammals, as well as a beautiful feature for humans.
Bird nest boxes
Your dedication helps to support the building, monitoring, cleaning and maintenance of our many bird boxes.
Limitations
You will not own the tree, pond, bird box or wildflowers you dedicate, or the land on which they are situated.
Young trees are at their most vulnerable in the first five years of their life. We will control competing vegetation, usually through natural methods. Any trees lost within five years will be replaced. Beyond that, replacement is not included in our dedications.
Trees are dedicated by one customer only, at any one time. Dedications and sponsorships described as ‘Five years duration’ will be offered to the original client again at the five year anniversary. If not taken up, they will be made available to the general public.
Bird boxes may be re-dedicated after a few years; the dedication is described as covering one breeding season.
Ponds, areas of bluebells and wildflowers may be dedicated by several people.
Carbon Offsetting
General
Make it Wild’s key objective is to create new, permanent nature reserves where native flora and fauna can flourish. This includes planting many different species of UK-native trees to establish naturalistic, biodiverse woodlands.
Many of these trees are made available to be allocated to the third-party Partners to offset their greenhouse gas emissions.
Once allocated, these trees will be reserved for that Partner in perpetuity. It is Make it Wild’s intention to permanently maintain all the woodlands they create as places of sanctuary for nature. The trees will never be cut down for timber, nor will the land they grow on be used for any other type of development.
Young trees are at their most vulnerable in the first five years of their life. Make it Wild will protect the trees from the effects of extremes of weather, competing vegetation, animal browsing and other forms of damage. Any trees lost within five years will be replaced. Beyond that time-period replacement is not contractual.
The Partner will not own the trees allocated, or the land on which they are planted.
Purchasing Allocated Trees
Trees allocated for carbon offsetting are photographed and mapped from the air and their precise position is recorded in digital form. This data is securely held by Make it Wild.
Partners can purchase the carbon that these trees will accrue over their lifetime. This offset is based on a calculation of the carbon dioxide (CO2) they will, on average, absorb from the atmosphere in the first 40 years of their growth.
This CO2 offset can be purchased as a one-off amount in units of 10 Tonnes or in regular monthly amounts in the form of a carbon offsetting Subscription.
In the case of a Subscription, the projected amount for the year is divided into 12 equal instalments and the cost is collected by monthly Direct Debit. An existing Subscription plan can be chosen, or a bespoke plan can be created for whatever size of offset that is needed. The trees for the full year ahead are allocated at the beginning of the Subscription and a Certificate issued showing that full year’s trees.
On or before the anniversary of the Subscription plan’s inception (and on every subsequent anniversary) Make it Wild will contact the Partner to establish whether the size of the plan needs to be adjusted upwards or downwards to reflect the scale of the offset needed for the subsequent year. A new allocation of trees in one of Make it Wild’s nature reserves will be made and a new Certificate will be issued.
The Partner should give no less than 3 months’ notice to Make it Wild should they wish to close their carbon offsetting Subscription.
In the event of a Subscription being closed before the anniversary of its inception, then Make it Wild reserve the right to release any trees, for which the projected carbon content is surplus to quantity that has been purchased at that point, to another Partner to contribute to their offset.
Make it Wild is happy for current clients to refer to it and to the carbon offsetting being carried out with Make it Wild in their marketing and promotional material and other communications. This authority to use Make it Wild's trade marks and other intellectual property is subject to Make it Wild's right to require amendments to any such use that, in Make it Wild's reasonable opinion, is detrimental to it and automatically terminates on expiry of the relevant period of any order or Subscription plan.
Venue Hire
Definitions
The “Venue” refers to the rooms within Bank Woods Barn, The Shepherds’ Hut and all land at Bank Woods, B6165, Summerbridge HG3 4JR.
The “Hirer” refers to the individual, group, or organisation responsible for the booking.
General
Make it Wild may from time to time amend or add to the Terms and Conditions of hire of the Venue in writing.
The Hirer shall ensure that their event/hire complies with all relevant legislation and regulations.
Restrictions of Venue
The Hirer must fully declare the purpose for hiring the Venue, which must be used only for the activity it was booked for.
The Hirer may not exceed the stated maximum occupancy for any space.
Use of the Venue is restricted to the date and time it was booked for.
Smoking and vaping are prohibited on the Venue.
Alcohol may not be brought onto the Venue.
The Venue can only be accessed via authorised means as instructed.
No dogs are allowed on the Venue, except for guide and assistance dogs.
Fires, barbecues and other sources of ignition may only be used with the express permission of Make it Wild, and only in places intended for that purpose.
The Hirer must ensure participants of their event park in designated parking areas.
Responsibilities of the Hirer
The Hirer must provide Make it Wild with a risk assessment specific to the activity they are running.
The activity must be agreed upon with Make it Wild, and must be centred around nature in some way.
All rooms must be left as they were found, and it is the Hirer’s responsibility to dispose of any rubbish and keep the Venue tidy.
The Hirer must make sure that all gates are left as they were found.
Payment and Cancellations
The fee will be agreed before the booking is confirmed.
Make it Wild require a 25% non-refundable deposit to secure the booking.
The remaining 75% must be paid at least 14 days before the event.
Cancellations must be made by contacting Make it Wild, by email.
Cancellations made within 14 days before the event will result in the forfeiture of the entire fee.
We reserve the right to cancel any booking if:
The 75% balance is not paid at least 14 days before the event.
We believe that our Venue are to be used for inappropriate or illegal purposes.
Health and Safety
The Hirer must provide us with a risk assessment specific to the activity they are running, 14 days before the event. This must include actions in the case of an emergency.
Prior to the event, the Hirer must confirm that they have read the general risk assessment which we provide, familiarise themselves with any emergency procedures and be aware of any potential hazards.
It is the Hirer’s responsibility to ensure that they and anyone working for/with them have undergone relevant checks and clearance procedures, e.g. DBS checks.
It is the Hirer’s responsibility to ensure that any children are supervised at all times, and are not permitted in the kitchen area.
Any tools or equipment the Hirer wishes to use must be deemed appropriate by Make it Wild, and must be mentioned in the Hirer’s risk assessment.
Any electrical equipment that the Hirer intends to use in the Venue must be PAT tested.
The Hirer shall ensure they are familiar with the fire alarm points; fire evacuation procedures, routes, refuge point and assembly point; location of first aid kit.
Any accidents must be reported to Make it Wild.
The hirer must ensure that fire doors remain closed, and fire escapes must be unimpeded.
Insurance
During the period of the hire, the Hirer shall be responsible for all damages, losses, claims and costs arising out of their use of the Venue. They shall indemnify the Venue from and against any expense liability, loss, claim or proceedings including claims for personal injury or death arising during the activity for which the Venue were hired, except where this can be proved to be due to the negligence of the Venue the staff of Make it Wild.
The Hirer must hold Public Liability Insurance to a value of £5m. Details should be included with the risk assessment they submit to Make it Wild.
Damage; Lost Property; Nuisance
Make it Wild must be informed immediately about any loss or damage incurred within the Venue. In the case of any loss or damage, this will be charged back to the Hirer.
For any items that are believed to be lost or left on the Venue after the event, enquiries can be made by contacting Make it Wild.
The Hirer must not do or allow anyone attending their event to do anything on the Venue which may cause a nuisance to Make it Wild or the wildlife we share our space with.
It is the responsibility of the Hirer to require any person causing such a nuisance to leave the Venue.
Safeguarding; Confidentiality; Data Protection
The Hirer shall ensure that if their event involves children, they have appropriate child protection policies and procedures in place.
The Hirer must keep the financial details of their agreement with Make it Wild confidential.
The Hirer’s information shared with the Venue will be managed in confidence and accordance with GDPR.
Events and Activities
Cancellations
For cancellations more than 30 days before the event, we will refund 50% of the price. For cancellations within 30 days of the event, no refunds will be made.
You may transfer your booking to another person, but must let us know at least two weeks in advance so that we can arrange for the new attendee to complete a registration form.
If you are unable to attend the event you have booked for, just like any other theatre, venue or event, we are unfortunately unable to transfer your booking to other dates or other events.
In the unlikely event that Make it Wild have to cancel the event, you will be given the option of moving your booking to another event, or a full refund.
Location

Risk Assessments, Insurance
We complete a detailed Risk Assessment for all our activities. All external facilitators also do their own Risk Assessment.
Make it Wild have a zero-tolerance approach to sexual harassment.
We hold Public Liability Insurance to a value of £5m.
