Description
Memorial Tree in Yorkshire
Finding a beautiful final resting place can help with healing after the passing of a loved one.
A meaningful option is to dedicate a Memorial tree in their honour.
We have a beautiful Memorial Woodland in Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Beauty.
A tree of your choice
You can choose from the following trees which we know grow well in Nidderdale:
- bird cherry
- hawthorn
- hazel
- rowan
- silver birch
- wild cherry
If you would prefer a different native tree, we will try to help.
Growing a new life
The ashes of your loved one will be mixed with a specially formulated planting mix, to provide nutrients for the tree. In this way, they will contribute to a wonderful new life.
A dedication plaque
With every memorial tree we include an oak plaque, featuring your message of dedication.

Would you prefer a more permanent feature to show your message of dedication?
We offer Dedication Stones carved from stones, from our own land, which have the same geology as Brimham Rocks which is close by.
Reserving a plot
You can reserve a plot near your loved one’s tree, for future memorial trees for other family members. Monthly payment options are available. Discover more here:Reserve a Plot.
Our track record
We are very experienced at tree planting and creating new woodlands. In 2011 we began by planting 20,000 trees which now form Sylvan Nature Reserve near York. To date we have planted more than 100,000 trees in locations across North Yorkshire and the wider UK.
Planting and visiting your tree
We will:
- prepare a planting location for the ashes and your chosen tree
- on a day of your choice, plant a young native woodland tree with the ashes and nutrients mix
- welcome you and your family to help us to plant and water the tree, if you wish. Some families read poems or sing songs.
- place your engraved wooden plaque (or dedication stone if ordered) by the tree
- allow you and family members to visit the tree whenever you wish
- maintain the woodland and nurture your tree in the Memorial Woodland in perpetuity

Frequently asked questions
Where is Make it Wild’s Wilsill Memorial Woodland?
Willsill Memorial Woodland is a beautiful spot overlooking the Nidd Valley. It’s close to Pateley Bridge.
Why do the ashes need to have extra nutrients added?
Cremation ashes are toxic to trees, and should not be used as a planting medium, or scattered near trees, unless they are treated. Our patented nutrient mix gives the memorial tree a great start in life.
Can you recommend a place for a meal afterwards?
We would recommend Wildings Riverside Cafe in Pateley Bridge, or The Wellington Inn, Darley.
We live far away – is there somewhere to stay?
We have a lovely holiday cottage nearby. Heather Lea, Summerbridge. Contact helen@makeitwild.co.uk to check availability.
How old is a memorial tree when it is planted?
Our memorial trees are around 4 years old when they are planted. They are usually around 1.5m tall, or more. We will make sure they have the necessary protection from rabbits and deer to grow strong. This allows them to support nature and biodiversity for many years to come.
What is the Ashes Register?
You can record the final resting place of your loved one’s ashes on The Ashes Register. There is no charge.
